Ecumenical Programming

The Minnesota Council of Churches is committed to working together with its 24 member judicatories, as well as other Christian denominations, on a variety of ecumenical programming and joint ventures. One of these is observing the international Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The Week of Prayer is an international observance which calls on people to pray for the unity of the church. This observance, which falls annually between January 18th & 25th, has been celebrated for more than 100 years

Each year, regional ecumenical partners are invited to produce a basic liturgical text on a biblical theme. A team from the World Council of Churches (WCC) and Roman Catholic representatives works together to ensure the text is appropriate for prayer throughout the world and that it seeks visible unity of the church. The final text and associated materials are then disseminated to WCC member churches and Roman Catholic episcopal conferences.

Sample topics from years past have centered on the ecumenical situation in Romania; the prophet Ezekiel, who lived in a tragically divided nation and longed for the unity of his people; and the church of Jerusalem of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

There are many ways you and/or your congregation can observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:

  • Exchange preachers or choirs with another church
  • Pray for another church
  • Hold a worship service in cooperation with another church
  • Organize a Bible Study exploring the year's topic
  • Establish a page on your congregational website, relevant blog, or other appropriate online forum on the theme and special events planned for the week
  • Arrange tours of area churches conducted by guides who are knowledgeable about each church's art, architecture, history, liturgical traditions, outreach programs, etc. Afterward, meet for refreshments and fellowship.
