Public Worship Services and Ceremonies

Given our longstanding relationships with Christian and interfaith communities, the Minnesota Council of Churches is often called on to help with the coordination of public prayer services. Below are some of the prayer services we offer or have offered.

  • Annual Prayer at the Fair
Each year, MCC presents an ecumenical worship service at the Minnesota State Fair. "Prayer at the Fair" is designed to celebrate God's creation. Those atttending represent the many denominations that make up MCC, along with celebrants from a wide variety of faith traditions. The casual service contains the familiar form of church including hymns, prayers, and a sermon, but gets into the fun spirit of the fair. We even use our traditional "bulletins on a stick."

  • Minnesotans Standing Together ― 2011
In response to a time when the forces of division abounded, Minnesotans of many faith traditions―Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims―united for a multifaith prayer service. They prayed for respect for the many and varying ways citizens of Minnesota profess their religious beliefs.

  • I-35W Bridge Collapse ― 2007
When the I-35W bridge collapsed in August of 2007, MCC coordinated several interfaith prayer services. We worked with the Downtown Minneapolis Clergy Association to provide a prayer service at Temple Israel and helped the governor's office coordinate a prayer service at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, which was attended by more than 500 people. In 2008, MCC partnered with The Basilica of Saint Mary and the offices of Governor Tim Pawlenty and Mayor R.T. Rybak to organize an interfaith prayer service to mark the anniversary of the bridge collapse. View photos of the prayer service.
